Getting in the gym and staying in shape is very important for maintaining proper health. It gives you an extra boost throughout the day, relieves anxiety, and helps you think more clearly. However, most people don't push themselves hard enough, or they over work their bodies to the point of muscle degradation. For this article, I want to highlight one aspect of the gym that can be improved for anyone, even if you think you're in good shape.
Whether you are a gym rat or a novice looking to lose some weight, you need to learn how to properly manage your heart rate. Use whatever cardio equipment you like or go for a run outside. The key is to keep your heart rate in a specific range for your target goal. If you want to lose weight and burn fat, increase your heart rate by 60-70%. If you want to build endurance, increase your heart rate by about 80-90%. If you do a short explosive workout for endurance, like sprints, then make sure you bring your heart rate back down before you start your next rep/sprint/etc.
This is the easiest and best way to start seeing immediate changes in your workout intensity. Trust me, you'll get more out of each workout and you'll feel great!
